{"id":36608,"date":"2023-09-11T17:44:25","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T21:44:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/the-leaders-guide-to-choosing-curriculum-that-actually-engages-students\/"},"modified":"2023-09-11T17:44:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T21:44:25","slug":"the-leaders-guide-to-choosing-curriculum-that-actually-engages-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/the-leaders-guide-to-choosing-curriculum-that-actually-engages-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The Leader\u2019s Guide to Choosing Curriculum That Actually Engages Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that middle school and high school students have a million different things vying for their attention\u2013extra-curriculars, grades, friends, frenemies, and social media, to name a few.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does this affect how often students come to our programming, but it also means that they probably won\u2019t keep coming back if our programming isn\u2019t engaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, this doesn\u2019t mean that we are advocating for finding the next \u2018flash in the pan\u2019 trend to grab their attention, but it does mean that if students don\u2019t feel like coming to church is positively impacting their lives and answering the questions they are asking, they will most likely find somewhere else to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why when it comes to choosing a curriculum for youth ministry, one of the most important questions you can ask is,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWill this <\/b><b><i>actually <\/i><\/b><b>engage the students in your ministry?\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, there are other things to think about, like theology, price, assets, customizability, integration with technology, and ease of use, but if our students aren\u2019t engaged, most likely, their faith will not be transformed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are reading this, you\u2019ve probably already arrived at two big ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know that when it comes to <\/span>what<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you teach teenagers every week, <\/span>you need a strategy.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s one reason you need curriculum for your youth ministry. You know you have a limited amount of time every year to influence a student\u2019s faith, so you have to be intentional about WHAT you teach. <b>If you\u2019re not thoughtful about your yearly strategy, you could end up missing the most important things.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To say it another way, you are intentional about making sure your messaging strategy is <b>theologically sound.<\/b> The choices about what you teach, and don\u2019t teach in a year is a theological decision. Winging it every week, or piecing together a strategy can lead to an incomplete theological foundation if not evaluated through the lens of your annual messaging strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there\u2019s the second big idea.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know that it matters not just <\/span><b>what<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> content you teach, but <\/span><b>how<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you teach it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could have the best scope and sequence (or as we call it,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/04\/26\/refine-the-message-with-a-scope-and-cycle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scope &amp; cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but if your weekly content fails to communicate in a way a student can understand and apply, it won\u2019t be an effective strategy or curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You understand that your message doesn\u2019t just need to be theologically sound but also engaging. <\/span><b>Students can\u2019t learn from a message they aren\u2019t paying attention to or don\u2019t understand.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say it another way, in order for your messaging strategy to be effective, it needs to be <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you choose a curriculum that is both <\/span><b>theologically sound<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we think it\u2019s possible to have both. We know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you teach a kid about God will impact the rest of their lives, their future families, and the future of the Church. So, we take <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they believe and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they believe it very seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the Bible is a big book, and they won\u2019t remember (or understand) all of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, it\u2019s important to <\/span><b>prioritize and repeat what matters most<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that the truth of WHO God is and WHAT God has done for them will be cemented in their hearts long after they leave our programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re like us \u2014 you want your students to leave your ministry knowing everything. But, very quickly, you\u2019ve come to realize how impossible that is \u2014 and why it\u2019s so important to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2021\/09\/13\/refine-the-message-to-say-what-matters-most\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refine the message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do we decide what\u2019s most important? Thankfully Jesus told us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus said \u201c\u2018Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first and greatest commandment.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the second is like it: \u2018Love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:34-40 NIV).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, Orange\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/xp3-youth-ministry-curriculum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">middle school and high school ministry curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is centered around making what Jesus said matters most, matter most. This curriculum begins with the great commandment which can be broken down into three primary relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love God<br \/>\n<\/span>Love Others<br \/>\nLove Life<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, a student\u2019s relationship with God, others, and themselves is life-changing\u2014but only if they understand those relationships in a biblical context. So, in addition to the big three relationships, there are some core theological insights we want to make sure a student doesn\u2019t miss.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call these the three basic truths, and every lesson, story, and topic re-enforces one of these truths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We want middle schoolers to believe:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will follow Jesus because he knows me better than I know myself.<br \/>\n<\/span>I will love God because God never stops loving me.<br \/>\nI will live my faith so others can know who Jesus is.<\/p>\n<p>We want high schoolers to believe:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m created to pursue relationship with my creator.<br \/>\n<\/span>I trust what Jesus did the transform the person I need to become.<br \/>\nI live to demonstrate God\u2019s love to those around me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to make sure teenagers don\u2019t just believe the right things, but these truths begin to transform their lives and become the foundation of an everyday faith. That\u2019s why these teachings are at the center of our curriculum. Not only that, but our curriculum goes through many theological edit rounds by leaders from different seminaries and denominations to make sure we are explaining these truths and everything we teach in a theologically appropriate way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as you evaluate your curriculum choices \u2014 ask how it<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/03\/09\/how-to-prioritize-what-to-teach-kids-and-teenagers-at-your-church\/\"> <b>prioritizes what\u2019s most important<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/03\/09\/how-to-prioritize-what-to-teach-kids-and-teenagers-at-your-church\/\">https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/03\/09\/how-to-prioritize-what-to-teach-kids-and-teenagers-at-your-church\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Choosing A Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sixth grader is not the same as a twelfth grader. A sixth grader is not even the same as an eighth grader, and a ninth-grade student is vastly different from a senior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason the three basic truths we just presented look different for middle school students and high school students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, while many of the topics we teach middle school students and high school students may be the same, how we talk about them will be vastly different. For instance, what a middle schooler needs to know about making wise decisions when it comes to dating will be different than what a high schooler needs to know. What we teach and how we teach middle schoolers and high schoolers has to be different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to find a curriculum that isn\u2019t just theologically sound but is also <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when it comes to developmentally appropriate curriculum, there are a few things important to remember:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There is a BIG difference between a middle schooler and a high schooler.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, this is obvious, but sometimes it\u2019s easy to forget this when it comes to programming. It can be easy to expect the sixth grader to laugh at the sarcastic joke that upperclassmen love. We are surprised when middle schoolers don\u2019t understand or engage in the abstract angsty worship music that the high schoolers think is great or we struggle to get the too cool senior guys to jump around. We forget that the seventh graders are self-conscious and don\u2019t want to be volunteers for up-front games and get annoyed when seniors are again too cool to engage with the group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While, of course, all of these examples matter, it is even more important to understand how middle school and high school students think, learn, and process their world if we want them to not just be engaged but actually understand the content we teach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Middle schoolers think like engineers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They solve problems by connecting concepts, so they work together. They also personalize abstract concepts by connecting ideas. That\u2019s why puzzles, patterns, and codes can be helpful for learning in this stage. When it comes to big ideas, we should try to break them down instead of watering them down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High schoolers think like philosophers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and seek to understand what is unseen and cannot be measured. They want to discover meaning and learn best through processing out loud. That\u2019s why we should encourage open debate, multiple perspectives and applied reasoning in our activities and discussions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So \u2014 how can your curriculum and what you teach leverage these insights so that each age can understand and retain the timeless truth you unpack each week?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Students change each year.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkorange.com\/phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase Research Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Orange underscores how kids and teenagers change <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each year. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year,\u00a0 there are some unique developmental opportunities that you\u2019ve never had before, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you may never get again. And your content should reflect that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Everything should be connected to where a student is developmentally.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, being developmentally sound means <\/span><b><i>everything<\/i><\/b><b> that happens in our programming\u2014not just the teaching\u2014is connected to where a student is developmentally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It impacts how we . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play games<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engage and plan small group conversations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design the look and feel of the room<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the music playing in the background.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The curriculum and strategy you choose should bring a holistic understanding of each age group, not just sprinkle in ideas.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Orange, our developmental science is in our DNA. When you plan ahead, not only does your life and workload transform, but you\u2019ll get more strategic with how you engage the students in your ministry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s a scope and cycle? Here\u2019s our quick description.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scope: A comprehensive plan that prioritizes what you teach.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cycle: Your plan to recycle and reinforce what you teach so it&#8217;s effective.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have instead heard the phrase \u201cscope and sequence.\u201d Some educators use the term sequence instead of cycle, but <\/span><b>sequential learning is more effective when teaching concepts that build on each other in a linear fashion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, when learning math, you learn to count, then you learn addition, then multiplication, pre-algebra, then quantum physics. But thinking in terms of sequential learning can be misleading when it comes to faith development. That\u2019s because <\/span><b>we don&#8217;t learn everything we need to know the first time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, we often <\/span><b>discover something new in a passage of scripture we&#8217;ve heard or read a hundred times before<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think in terms of cyclical learning, you recognize core truths will have a fresh meaning with every new phase of a kid&#8217;s and teenager\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So your scope prioritizes <\/span><b>what you will teach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and your cycle strategically <\/span><b>reinforces those principles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> again and again in a variety of creative ways. Will it fit your unique context? Is it thoughtfully organized, missing the essentials of what you need?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every youth ministry looks different, but nearly all successful youth programs have <\/span><b>seven key segments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their weekly ministry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, this might seem like overkill and way too much. To be fair, you may not leverage every segment every week, and you should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/08\/17\/the-importance-of-contextualizing-7-segments-for-xp3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contextualize each segment for your unique context<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But when you shift how you think about curriculum from just messages and content to a complete strategy for your ministry\u2014you\u2019ll see why. A good curriculum and strategy can help you not just be intentional about what happens on stages and in circles, but actually help you create environments teenagers love to be in, partner with parents, and engage students every day of the week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you evaluate, determine how a curriculum can help you in each of these seven areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Seven Segments of a Weekly Experience<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Prelude &#8211; setting the tone for the experience<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two things middle school and high school students have in common: They have a million different things and activities vying for their attention. They also care a lot about being liked and being in spaces where they are liked. That means that if students don\u2019t like being in our environment, they will often find somewhere else to be, and the way we create an environment they enjoy being in is by creating welcoming spaces that communicate that we like them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why in both XP3 Middle School and XP3 High School Ministry Curriculum you will find ideas for decorations and set design in your Ministry Leader Guide, plus a background music playlist available on Spotify for your environment. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>Social &#8211; providing time for fun interaction<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fun breaks down walls and makes relationships go deeper. Fun over time creates connection. So, we take fun really seriously. That\u2019s why we provide game ideas in both student curriculums. However, the types of games we provide will look different. Since middle schoolers often feel awkward and insecure, we tend to provide more group games in XP3 Middle School Curriculum. In XP3 High School Curriculum, we tend to provide more up-front games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Worship &#8211; inviting people to respond to God.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In student ministry environments, this often looks like worship through music. Because abstract songs can be difficult for middle schoolers and high schoolers to understand, we provide developmentally appropriate song suggestions in the premium package for both XP3 MS and XP3 HS.
