{"id":36602,"date":"2023-09-01T14:10:58","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T18:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/why-struggles-with-mental-health-are-not-a-lack-of-faith\/"},"modified":"2024-01-14T13:20:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-14T18:20:58","slug":"why-struggles-with-mental-health-are-not-a-lack-of-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/why-struggles-with-mental-health-are-not-a-lack-of-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Struggles With Mental Health Are Not a Lack of Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I want to challenge you.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to put a different spin on a belief that has been floating around the Christian community regarding mental health.&nbsp; And here, in a nutshell, is that spin:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health struggles are NOT due to a lack of faith. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of you have heard a pastor, teacher, or theological scholar say something like:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;\u201cIf you struggle with ______, you just aren\u2019t praying enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour faith just isn\u2019t big enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026or even\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Insert mental health condition] is just a form of atheism.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep. I\u2019ve heard this said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And maybe you\u2019ve bought into that idea. After all, you can probably even point to verses about not worrying. Not to mention, you were listening to an expert you trust and, I believe, has the very best intention to help you.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, just to clarify, I (Jon) want to help you\u2026but I am no expert, so you don\u2019t have to listen to me.&nbsp; I\u2019m just an ordinary Christian like you\u2013a person spending their life walking with, learning about, and growing closer to Jesus.&nbsp; And every day I spend on this earth seems to emphatically remind me,\u201cYou\u2019re no expert\u2026but you are loved, so don\u2019t give up.\u201d When it comes to the deep, unexplored intricacies of theology and unraveling the mysteries of God\u2026I am no expert. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUT\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do know a thing or two about mental health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-nine years ago, I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2. Many people refer to it as manic depression.\u00a0 It\u2019s a disorder that causes massive mood and behavioral swings referred to as mania and depression.\u00a0 Though the jury is out, there is a lot of evidence supporting the idea that it is a physiological (not JUST psychological) condition that affects neurotransmitters in the brain that control our moods and states of being.\u00a0 <br><br>Mania is an elevated state where one will make rash, impulsive decisions with very little thought of the consequences of one\u2019s actions.\u00a0 I have experienced a few of these episodes in my life.\u00a0 They are terrifying.\u00a0 They are embarrassing.\u00a0 They are moments in my life I wish never happened.\u00a0 Maybe one day I will talk about them publicly, but\u2026. probably not any time soon.<br><br>Depression is a state of darkness. That\u2019s my definition, not a clinical one. I personally tend to stay away from the word \u201csad\u201d when describing depression (though, from the outside, it can be perceived as deep sadness by onlookers).\u00a0 When trying to convey what my depression is like, I often say this:<br>If God is Love, and Hell is a complete absence of that Love\u2026. then depression is like standing at the entrance of Hell and trying NOT to knock on its front door. <br><br>Dramatic?\u00a0 Yeah, maybe. But I think it effectively reflects that it is more than \u201cbeing sad\u201d.\u00a0 At least for me.\u00a0 It is a devastating experience that I hate and wouldn\u2019t wish on my worst enemy.<br><br>There are things I do in order to prevent these episodes and\/or manage their severity.\u00a0 I try to exercise, eat well, get a solid 8 hours of sleep at night as well as take part in regular therapy sessions with accredited psychologists and psychiatrists.\u00a0 I regularly take medication as well.\u00a0 \u00a0 Over the years, I\u2019ve found a combination of these steps that have helped me manage this disorder. I\u2019ve even learned how to \u201csee\u201d an episode coming before it gets worse. But, again, that\u2019s after 29 years of living with it.\u00a0 <br><br>But I still get sick.\u00a0 Not only is it hard on me, but it is extremely hard on my family and those who love me.\u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine how badly they want to \u201cfix\u201d it, take it away from me, and pray for a miracle of healing and deliverance. In fact, I know they do pray for it.\u00a0 I want them to. I know when I am well, I do, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See, despite all the things I do to prevent my depression from rearing its ugly head the ONLY thing I have to hold on to when I DO fall into that dark pit in my mind\u2026is my faith.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll be honest. When I am depressed, it\u2019s not the strongest faith. Depending on the severity of the episode, I am barely able to even believe there IS a God sometimes. Especially a God who loves me. Because love, hope, my own self-worth\u2026. they all seem so very far away.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, by the grace of God, my faith does not COMPLETELY leave me. It\u2019s still there. Like a tiny golden thread. I can barely hang on to it, but it\u2019s there.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See, when everything else has failed\u2026what little faith I can hold on to is\u2026everything.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, you can see why the statements that portray mental health conditions as a complete lack of faith are so devastating for me to hear.&nbsp; It is the remnant of faith, the very act of the love and hope of Jesus reaching into my darkness, that keeps me going.&nbsp; Trying to convince me that it isn\u2019t real and \u201cmy faith is weak\u201d when I am depressed removes the last hope I have. It negates the only thing I can hold on to.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though I believe it can, \u201chaving faith\u201d doesn\u2019t just manifest itself as total healing. Faith can also be the quiet strength that acknowledges the suffering of life and helps you walk through it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve written this and let you into my life a little to say this\u2026if you are struggling, I urge you to take a step to find help, to NOT be ashamed, and to know you are valuable and loved.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AND\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mental health issues are NOT a manifestation of a lack of faith.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me say it again.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mental health issues are NOT, NOT, NOT due to a lack of faith.<br><br>Your faith is what can help you walk through the darkest moments when it seems all else has failed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-ministry-leaders-can-support-mental-health\">How Ministry Leaders Can Support Mental Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you would like to learn more about what mental illness is and how to foster mental health, check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/mentalhealth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinkorange.com\/mentalhealth\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to start learning from a variety of resources today!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mental health struggles happen, and ministry leaders aren&#8217;t immune.
