However, that doesn\u2019t mean <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/inviting-recruiting-building-team-of-volunteers\/\">finding and keeping<\/a> volunteers in your ministry is easy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a ministry leader \u2014&nbsp;recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers may actually be one of the most difficult things you do.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do we recruit and retain the right volunteers?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-your-yearly-next-gen-ministry-volunteer-recruitment-strategy\">Building Your Yearly Next-Gen Ministry Volunteer Recruitment Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hear the words \u201crecruiting volunteers\u201d chances are a few things come to mind. Maybe you think about a pitch on a Sunday morning<\/span>, or<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span>big<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> event .<\/span> Maybe it&#8217;s just <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sheer panic because you know you have a lot of recruiting to do.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what if when you think of recruiting volunteers, you actually begin to think about it as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/05\/26\/inviting-recruiting-building-team-of-volunteers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inviting?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we aren\u2019t just looking for warm bodies to fill roles so we can get a to-do list done. We are actually inviting people to influence the faith of the next generation. We are inviting people to develop disciple kids and teenagers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do we invite the best leaders to be a part of our ministry?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personal-invitation-gt-public-announcement\">Personal Invitation &gt; Public Announcement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making an announcement during a Sunday service is one (good) way to recruit volunteers. You can even program a whole Sunday service or another event to recruit volunteers. While that can be a good start, relying <em>only<\/em> on an event is not a good idea. Instead, leaders are looking for a personal invitation to make an impact.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-year-long-process-gt-one-time-event\">Year-long Process &gt; One-Time Event<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like a one-time event won\u2019t recruit your best leaders, chances are, a one-time event also won\u2019t recruit enough leaders. That\u2019s why you should be inviting leaders to be a part of your ministry all year long.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leverage-your-leaders-and-network\">Leverage Your Leaders (And Network)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what\u2019s true: your best leaders will recruit your best leaders. So, ask your volunteers for recommendations on who they think should be on your team<\/span>. Then,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make it easy for them to help you recruit leaders. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, y<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our volunteers aren\u2019t the only ones in your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2020\/05\/02\/the-most-important-part-of-your-job\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">network you should leverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ask your executive leaders, friends, and coworkers if they know of anyone who would be a great person to add to your team.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, here\u2019s a bonus tip: Ask the people who say no to volunteering two questions:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan I ask you again in the future?\u201d<br><\/span>\u201cIs there someone you know who I should ask?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This way, you not only know if they would potentially volunteer in the future, but you also now have more names of people you could ask.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-expect-more-not-less-from-volunteers\">Expect More, Not Less from Volunteers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it also matters how you invite people to be a part of your ministry. <\/span>W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hen you feel desperate, it can be tempting to downplay <\/span>the role so the<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ask doesn\u2019t feel as big. Resist that temptation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eaders will want to know that they are giving<\/span> their<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time and energy to something<\/span> that<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matters. Not to mention, both you and your new volunteer will be disappointed in the long run if you aren\u2019t honest about your expectations upfront.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-find-support-resources\">Find Support Resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, the recruitment (and onboarding) process for volunteers is a lot<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he good news is that we have resources that can help:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/resources\/volunteer-job-descriptions-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteer Job Descriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Help clarify roles so volunteers know what you are recruiting them to do.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/volunteer-starter-kit\/\">Volunteer Starter Kit <\/a>&#8211; This free kit has everything you need to build your volunteer team and focus on what truly matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, make things a little easier on yourself by using a standard application form (like a Google Form), that connects to a Google Sheet or project management tool like Trello to track where volunteers are in the onboarding process. And always run background checks. Always. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-your-leader-training-strategy-nbsp\">Build Your Leader Training Strategy&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, now that you have your dream team\u2013or have at least onboarded some great volunteers\u2013what\u2019s next? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s time to actually do ministry together. S<\/span>o, you&#8217;ll<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to train and equip leaders so they can win.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, all of your volunteers will need training. Whether they are a host, cook, greeter, small group leader, or lighting technician, they will need to know your ministry\u2019s policies and practices to do their jobs well. More importantly, they will need to know how their role connects with the greater vision and strategy of your ministry so they know showing up to serve is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2023\/07\/03\/how-to-keep-your-volunteers-from-quitting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worth it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, your most important leaders are those who are discipling kids and students every week\u2013small group leaders. So, you will need to be extra intentional in how you train them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-training-small-group-leaders-to-lead-small\">Training Small Group Leaders to Lead Small<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small group leaders are kind of like a coach, mentor, friend, pastor, and teacher all in one. They invest in the lives of a few kids or teenagers over time to make a big difference. Essentially they<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.thinkorange.com\/products\/lead-small-five-big-ideas-every-small-group-leader-needs-to?_pos=1&amp;_sid=f2ac4fa0b&amp;_ss=r\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lead small.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five practices of small group leaders:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Be present<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by showing up predictably, mentally, and randomly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Create a safe place<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by leading the group, respecting the process, and guarding the heart.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Partner with parents <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by cueing parents, honoring the parents, and reinforcing the family.&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make it personal<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by living in community, setting priorities, and being real.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Move them out<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by moving your few to someone else, moving your few to be the Church, and moving your few to what\u2019s next.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"What is the Role of a Small Group Leader?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l5pNfO_4QXU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-train-annually-nbsp\">Train Annually&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These five principles are not the only things <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/whats-a-small-group-leader\/\">small group leaders<\/a> need to know. They will need to learn about the things like the <a href=\"http:\/\/phase training\">phase<\/a> their kids or students are in, how to respond to kids or teens in crisis, and your ministry policies to keep them and their few safe. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to train your leaders annually and equip both small group leaders and all of your volunteers to win in their roles. They will need to know how to navigate difficult conversations or how to do the craft for that week. That\u2019s why you will need to train leaders weekly and equip them so they show up to your ministry prepared.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-finding-resources-to-train-volunteers-in-your-ministry\">Finding Resources To Train Volunteers in Your Ministry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emails, events, content, oh my. Creating everything you need to train volunteers would be a full-time job alone.<\/span> Good thing you don&#8217;t have to do it all yourself! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-curriculum-nbsp\">Curriculum<b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best gifts you can give volunteers is a plan every week so they aren\u2019t having to make it up on their own. When we provide a great experience to our volunteers and create a culture where they want to be, we will have higher retention, and they will be more inclined to invited their friends to volunteer too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do we do that?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-celebrate-your-ministry-volunteers-nbsp\">Celebrate Your Ministry Volunteers&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone wants to know they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2023\/06\/08\/10-ways-to-appreciate-volunteers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appreciated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The same is true for our volunteers. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to celebrate how they are winning and the difference they are making in your ministry.&nbsp;<\/span>We always suggest you celebrate privately, publically, and randomly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrate them <strong>publicly<\/strong> by sharing on social media or in a Sunday service<\/span>. Celebrate them <strong>privately<\/strong> by giving them small gifts or notes. Finally, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrate them <strong>randomly<\/strong> by not just celebrating how they contribute to <\/span>your <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ministry, but what is happening in their personal lives like promotions, birthdays<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other achievements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cultivate-community\">Cultivate Community<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now more than ever, people are looking for and often struggling to find community. What if your ministry didn\u2019t just provide kids and teenagers with community, but your volunteers with community as well. Consider doing things like volunteer outings and building ice-breakers into your training so that volunteers can become friends with each other and experience deep community through serving together.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lead-human-volunteers\">Lead Human Volunteers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that volunteers are super-heroes, but sometimes we need to remember that they are humans\u2013humans with families, debt, goals, jobs, hobbies, and responsibilities outside of your ministry. Consider this as you create your ministry calendar, schedule your trainings and ask for help.
