As a leader, you’re constantly seeking opportunities to grow, learn, and expand your leadership horizons.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But you\u2019re also likely trying to figure out how to get your entire team on board. If you\u2019re a Next Gen, KidsMin or Student Ministry pastor, one of the hardest struggles you face is getting your senior pastor on board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That’s why I love Orange Tour. Normally, kids and student ministry people flock to Orange Conference and Orange Tour by the thousands, but it’s actually a great event for Senior Leaders to attend too. In fact, for a host of reasons, bringing your executive team to Orange Conference can be more catalytic than you think.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this article, I’ll share three steps that will help you invite your senior leader to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. Express Desires, Not Demands.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be honest. Senior pastors don\u2019t like being told what to do. Nobody does.\u00a0 So when you make an ask, express a desire, not a demand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This opens a conversation and allows your senior pastor to keep agency and feel like they have a choice. It becomes his\/her decision, not your demand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example of a better way to open the conversation and a worse way.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Do say:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHi Pastor Trevor, would you be open to a conversation about something we might do together this fall as a team?\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHey Pastor Trevor, you need to go to Orange Tour with me this fall. Really, it\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, of course you can frame the conversation in a way that\u2019s passionate and exciting, but asking thoughtful questions that seek insight into vision, strategies, and decision-making processes will encourage better dialogue and conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Approaching your senior leader (and the conversation) like this will demonstrate your respect for their leadership and give you a better shot at earning their buy-in.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2. Talk About Why<\/i> More Than You Talk About What<\/i> and How<\/i><\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

As Simon Sinek has famously said, people buy why you do it, not what you do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Attending Orange Tour is what you might want to happen, but explaining why can help your senior leader move from hesitant to enthusiastic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To do that, let your senior pastor know you understand and share the overarching vision and mission of your church. Align your ideas and initiatives with this larger framework, positioning yourself as a supportive partner in achieving your shared goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That might be even more persuasive than explaining who\u2019s on the speaker line up (as strong as it is), or that the event is just a single day, or the subjects that will be covered, or that senior leaders love it too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You can also explain that it will be a rare opportunity for the entire team to spend time off site, and that it will build unity and purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>how<\/span><\/i> tend to divide. <\/span>Why<\/span><\/i> unites. If you focus on why, you\u2019re far more likely to find that your senior pastor is open to your idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3. Give Your Senior Pastor Plenty of Leeway<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Most leaders hate feeling pressured into things. So after you have the initial conversation, don\u2019t pressure your pastor for a decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s better to say thanks and let them know you\u2019ll respect whatever decision they make. That gives them agency and some time to think about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you hear nothing back, follow up in a week or two. And rather than saying \u201cHave you made a decision?\u201d instead ask if they need any more information. \u201cHey, thanks for the conversation last week. I appreciate you considering it. I\u2019m wondering if you have any more questions or need any more information\u201d is a great way to bring up the topic again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\n<\/span>If you still don\u2019t get an answer in that conversation, ask a final question along the lines of \u201cWell, I\u2019m glad you\u2019ve got all the information you need. Do you know when you might be making a decision?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I realize you might think this is a lot of \u2018deferring\u2019 to your senior leader, but in my experience, leading up this way creates better results. Your request is one of a hundred decisions your senior pastor has to make, and they have to consider so many things you may be\u00a0 unaware of (board dynamics, congregational demands, and even what\u2019s going on at home for them).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

By asking questions, you position yourself as an ally, not as one more person who needs them to make a decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Few More Details<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your senior pastor will definitely have questions about the details. The <\/span>speaker line up<\/span><\/a> is exceptional and designed with senior leaders in mind,\u00a0 and Orange Tour is <\/span>coming to a city near you<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
