There\u2019s price, theology, media, customizability, and then the question of whether you\u2019ll still end up pounding coffee on a Saturday night to locate and wrangle documents and media together the next day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then there\u2019s the most important question \u2014 <\/span><b>will this <\/b><b><i>actually<\/i><\/b><b> engage the kids in my ministry?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will it help them develop a better faith and future because they can understand, apply, and be transformed every week of the year?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you are reading this, you\u2019ve probably already arrived to two big ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You know that when it comes to <em>what<\/em> you teach kids every week, you need a strategy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s one reason you need curriculum for your preschool ministry or children\u2019s ministry. You know you have a limited amount of time every year to influence a kid\u2019s faith, so you have to be intentional about WHAT you teach. <\/span><b>If you\u2019re not thoughtful about your yearly strategy, you could end up missing the most important things.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say it another way, you are intentional about making sure your messaging strategy is <\/span><b>theologically sound.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The choices about what you teach, and don\u2019t teach in a year is a theological decision. Winging it every week, or piecing together a strategy can lead to an incomplete theological foundation if not evaluated through the lens of your annual messaging strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there\u2019s the second big idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You know that it matters not just <em>what<\/em> content you teach, but <em>how<\/em> you teach it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could have the best scope and sequence (or as we call it,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/04\/26\/refine-the-message-with-a-scope-and-cycle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scope &amp; cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),\u00a0but if your weekly content fails to communicate in a way a kid can understand and apply, it won\u2019t be an effective strategy or curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You understand that your message doesn\u2019t just need to be theologically sound but also engaging. <\/span><b>Kids can\u2019t learn from a message they aren\u2019t paying attention to or don\u2019t understand.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say it another way, in order for your messaging strategy to be effective, it needs to be <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you choose a curriculum that is both <\/span><b>theologically sound<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, we think it\u2019s possible to have both. It\u2019s the reason we create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/first-look-preschool-ministry-curriculum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preschool ministry curriculum <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/252-kids-ministry-curriculum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kids &amp; preteen curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Curriculum can help you not just create a better strategy for your entire ministry, but bring effective messaging strategies for engaging every kid in your children\u2019s ministry and community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Choosing A Theologically Sound Curriculum<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s talk theology for a second. We know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you teach a kid about God will impact the rest of their lives, their future families, and the future of the Church. So, we take <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they believe and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they believe it very seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the Bible is a big book, and they won\u2019t remember (or understand) all of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, it\u2019s important to <\/span><b>prioritize and repeat what matters most<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that the truth of WHO God is and WHAT God has done for them will be cemented in their hearts long after they leave our programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re like us \u2014 you want want you kids to leave your ministry knowing everything. But, very quickly, you\u2019ve come to realize how impossible that is \u2014 and why it\u2019s so important to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2021\/09\/13\/refine-the-message-to-say-what-matters-most\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refine the message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do we decide what\u2019s most important? Thankfully Jesus told us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus said \u201c\u2018Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first and greatest commandment.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the second is like it: \u2018Love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:34-40 NIV).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, Orange\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkorange.com\/first-look\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preschool curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkorange.com\/252\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kids ministry curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is centered around making what Jesus said matters most, matter most. This curriculum begins with the great commandment which can be broken down into three primary relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love God<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Others<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Yourself<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, let\u2019s talk about that last one for a second. We realize Jesus wasn\u2019t saying we should be selfish or self-obsessed. But He was connecting how we love God and others to what we think about ourselves. You\u2019ve probably seen how a person relates to God or the people around them is almost always influenced by how they see themselves. So, it\u2019s imperative we help kids understand who God made them to be and how Jesus can transform them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, a kid\u2019s relationship with God, others, and themselves is life-changing\u2014but only if they understand those relationships in a biblical context. So, in addition to the big three relationships, there are some core theological insights we want to make sure a kid doesn\u2019t miss.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call these the three basic truths, and every lesson, story, and topic re-enforces one of these truths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want preschoolers to believe:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God made me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God loves me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus wants to be my friend forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want kids to believe:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I need to make the wise choice (which is Wisdom),\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can trust God no matter what (which is Faith).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I should treat others the way I want to be treated (which is Friendship).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to make sure kids don\u2019t just believe the right things, but these truths begin to transform their lives and become the foundation of an everyday faith.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as you evaluate your curriculum choices \u2014 ask how it<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orangeleaders.com\/2022\/03\/09\/how-to-prioritize-what-to-teach-kids-and-teenagers-at-your-church\/\"> <b>prioritizes what\u2019s most important<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"How to Prioritize What to Teach Kids and Teenagers at your Church\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z4AB8ce6Mnk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Choosing A Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preschoolers and kids are not the same. Kids and pre-teens are not the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason the three basic truths we just presented look different for preschoolers than they do for kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we teach and how we teach kids and preschoolers has to be different. At the same time, you know, keeping preschoolers and kids engaged and breaking down theological truths in a way they understand isn\u2019t easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to find a curriculum that isn\u2019t just theologically sound but is also <\/span><b>developmentally appropriate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when it comes to developmentally appropriate curriculum, there are a few things important to remember:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>There is a BIG difference between a kid and a preschooler.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, this is obvious, but sometimes it\u2019s easy to forget this when it comes to programming. It can be easy to expect toddlers to listen like kids and then be confused when they run around instead. At the same time, we can expect fourth or fifth-graders to engage in something that is too childish and then be surprised when they are bored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even beyond that, it\u2019s important to know how preschoolers and kids think and learn so they aren\u2019t just engaged, but actually understand the content we teach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Preschoolers think like artists, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0blending the imaginary with the real. They experience the world through the five senses and learn best through participation. That is why movement, music, and art are critical for learning in this phase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Elementary schoolers think like scientists <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and understand the world through concrete evidence and repetition. In your conversations about faith, use real-life examples and avoid abstract concepts. Incorporate activities and stories because they are motivated by fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So \u2014 how can your curriculum and what you teach leverage these insights so that each age can understand and retain the timeless truth you unpack each week?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Kids change each year.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkorange.com\/phase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase Research Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Orange underscores how kids change <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each year. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0That means two-year-olds are different than four-year-olds and 2nd graders are different than 5th graders. And your content should reflect that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Everything should be connected to where a kid is developmentally.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, being developmentally sound means <\/span><b><i>everything<\/i><\/b><b> that happens in our programming\u2014not just the teaching\u2014is connected to where a kid is developmentally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It impacts how we . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play games<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worship<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engage and plan small group conversations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design the look and feel of the room<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the music playing in the background.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The curriculum and strategy you choose should bring a holistic understanding of each age group, not just sprinkle in ideas.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Orange, our developmental science is in our DNA. When you plan ahead, not only does your life and workload transform, but you\u2019ll get more strategic with how you engage the kids in your ministry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So what\u2019s a scope and cycle? Here\u2019s our quick description.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Scope: A comprehensive plan that prioritizes what you teach.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cycle: Your plan to recycle and reinforce what you teach so it&#8217;s effective.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have instead heard the phrase \u201cscope and sequence.\u201d Some educators use the term sequence instead of cycle, but <\/span><b>sequential learning is more effective when teaching concepts that build on each other in a linear fashion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, when learning math, you learn to count, then you learn addition, then multiplication, pre-algebra, then quantum physics. But thinking in terms of sequential learning can be misleading when it comes to faith development. That\u2019s because <\/span><b>we don&#8217;t learn everything we need to know the first time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the same time, we often <\/span><b>discover something new in a passage of scripture we&#8217;ve heard or read a hundred times before<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think in terms of cyclical learning, you recognize core truths will have a fresh meaning with every new phase of a kid&#8217;s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So your scope prioritizes <\/span><b>what you will teach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and your cycle strategically <\/span><b>reinforces those principles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> again and again in a variety of creative ways. But when you shift how you think about curriculum from just messages and content to a complete strategy for your ministry\u2014you\u2019ll see why. Preschoolers need to feel safe as they enter a new environment so the social activities we provide are super inviting and fun. At the same time, the social activities introduce concepts and new words to preschoolers that they will learn more about in the Bible Story so they are more likely to understand them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social looks a little more relational for kids because, at this phase, kids care a lot about friendship.
