{"id":32026,"date":"2020-10-22T16:43:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T20:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/helping-youth-and-teenagers-with-emotions\/"},"modified":"2024-03-14T12:34:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T16:34:20","slug":"helping-youth-and-teenagers-with-emotions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkorange.com\/blog\/helping-youth-and-teenagers-with-emotions\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Help Students Identify Emotions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you found that in the past year (2020\u2014as if you needed the reminder), a single question has gotten a bit harder?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m talking about a question we ask each other all the time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a simple\u2026 \u201chow are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For me, the answer has more frequently been\u2026 I don\u2019t know!<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a fully grown adult\u2026 I could use some help identifying what i\u2019m feeling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This absence of emotional vocabulary can be even <strong>more<\/strong> significant for students.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about emotions is a learned skill. And being able to name the things you&#8217;re feeling is a first step to being able to deal and respond to those feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever gotten the \u201ci\u2019m annoyed\u201d response from a student? To which you, a wise leader\u2014know that \u201cannoyed\u201d is just the easiest emotion to grab off the shelf. It\u2019s *really* a description for being hurt, anxious, insecure, disappointed, or powerless. \u201cAnnoyed\u201d can just be an answer to explain negativity without having to be vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>The team at Orange Students has put together an Emotional Intelligence Bundle to help parents and Small Group Leaders identify and process the emotions of their students in a healthy way. The bundle centers around a tool called a Feelings Wheel. This feelings wheel was specifically adapted by a team of child development experts and mental health professionals to provide students with up-to-date language to expand their emotional vocabulary and grow in their understanding of themselves, God, and others.<\/p>\n<p>With the <em>Emotional Intelligence Bundle<\/em>, you\u2019ll get\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Feelings Wheel\u2014Updated to be student-friendly<\/li>\n<li>How To Use A Feelings Wheel: A Guide for Small Group Leaders<\/li>\n<li>Helping Your Kid Manage Their Emotions: A Guide for Parents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Why Use A Feelings Wheel In Small Groups?<\/h1>\n<p>By talking about feelings, and increasing your students emotional vocabulary, you\u2019re helping students realize that God has created us with complex and powerful emotions. In Scripture\u2014there are incredible examples of very real people experiencing very raw emotions.<\/p>\n<p>When you help students learn to identify and manage those emotions well, they\u2019ll gain a deeper understanding of how they can love God and others as themselves.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be reminded that students are walking through hard stuff, and experiencing a range of emotions and feelings. They need to be reminded that God is big, and God can handle their emotions. More than that, they need to know that they\u2019re not alone in their emotions.
